Services / SNAP / Food Assistance
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), often called food stamps, helps eligible households purchase food. State agencies administer applications and determine eligibility.
How benefits work
Eligible households generally receive benefits on an electronic benefits transfer card, which can be used to buy eligible food at authorized retailers. The benefit amount depends on household circumstances and applicable rules.
Applying for assistance
Contact the SNAP agency in your state to find its application and current requirements. You may need to provide information about household members, income and expenses and complete an eligibility interview. The agency will explain any documents needed and how to renew benefits.
